New Jersey First Chinese Baptist Church of Edison
Statement of Faith
The Bible itself, which consisted of sixty-six books, as the inspired and infallible Word of God that speaks with final authority concerning truth, morality, and proper conduct of mankind, is the sole and final source of all that we believe. For purposes of determining belief, practice, policy, and discipline, the pastor and the board of deacons have final interpretive authority on the meaning and application of the Bible for this church.
The church stands on a foundation of beliefs based on the Bible. These beliefs include:
The Bible
We believe that the original writings of the Bible are inspired by God without error of any kind, and are totally true and trustworthy. The sixty-six books of the Bible are the complete written revelation of God to man. The Bible is the sole and final authority for faith and life, providing encouragement, guidance, comfort and instruction for training in righteousness. It is the supreme standard of Christian faith and living.
The Triune God
We believe in the one living and true God, eternally existing in perfect unity as three equally and divine Persons (Father, Son and Holy Spirit). Each member of the Godhead, while executing distinct but complementary roles in redemptive history, has precisely the same nature, attributes, and being, and is equally worthy of the same glory and honor and obedience.
God The Father
We believe that God the Father orders and disposes all things according to the purposes of Grace. He is sovereign over heaven and earth. His fatherhood involves both His designation within the Trinity and His relationship with mankind. God is Father in truth to those who become children of God through faith in Jesus Christ. He is fatherly in His attitude toward all men.
God The Son
We believe Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God in the flesh, in all ways fully God, and fully human. We believe Jesus Christ was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of Mary, a virgin. He lived a sinless life and died on the cross as substitutionary sacrifice in the place of sinner. He was buried and was raised from the dead. He ascended in bodily form to the Father in heaven and will return again to receive those who have believed in Him.
God The Spirit
We believe that Holy Spirit dwells in each believer and effects a positive change of heart, mind and life. Every Christian has been baptized with the Holy Spirit upon conversion. While there is only one baptism of the Spirit, there may be many fillings of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit distributes spiritual gifts to each believer according to His will for the common good, sanctifies believers for obedience to Christ and glorifies the Father through them.
Man
We believe that man was created in the image of God by direct act of God and did not come into being as the result of evolution. He created them male and female. Gender is thus part of the goodness of God’s creation. Man was created to glorify God, worship and serve Him, and has fellowship with Him. Man fell through sin by disobeying God, thus incurring both physical and spiritual death, which alienated him from God. Man’s nature was thus corrupted and he is utterly lost, “dead in trespasses and sins,” and totally incapable of saving himself and coming back into right relationship with God by his own merit or effort.
Sin
We believe that Adam, the ancestor of mankind, was originally created in the image of God, fell through sin, and as a consequence of his sin, lost relationship with God. We believe that this spiritual death has been transmitted to the entire human race of man, the Man Christ Jesus alone being excepted.
Salvation
We believe that salvation for mankind is by God’s grace alone through faith. It is the free gift of God, neither merited nor secured in part or in whole by any virtue or work of man, but received only by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, in whom all true believers have the gift of eternal life, sonship in the family of God, deliverance and security from all condemnation, every spiritual resource needed for life and godliness. Apart from Christ, there is no salvation.
Church
We believe that the church is the body of Christ of which Jesus is the Head and whose members are those who have truly received Christ by faith. The local church is a tangible expression of the body of Christ in a particular location. We believe that the local church is an assembly of born-again believers coming together for the purpose of worship and mutual edification. Its scriptural officers are pastors and deacons. While both men and women are gifted for service in the church, the office of pastor is limited to men as qualified by Scripture. The mission of the church is to carry out the Great Commission (Matt. 28: 19-20) and the Great Commandment (Matt. 22: 37-40).
The Second Coming of Jesus Christ
We believe that Christ will come again to judge the living and the dead. When Christ comes again, all believers will be received into His glory forever.
The Statement of Faith does not exhaust the extent of our faith. We believe that in order to preserve the function and integrity of this church, and to provide a biblical role model to the members of this church, it is imperative that all persons employed by this church in any capacity, or who serve as volunteers, or are members of this church, agree to and abide by the Statement of Faith. (Matt 5: 16; Phil 2: 14-16; 1st Thess 5: 22.)
